Stress Due to Substance Abuse | Self Improvement Articles and Tips

People who are severely depressed or anxious over a long period of time are at a high danger for facing habit problems like alcoholism, smoking , drug abuse and other such forms of addiction. Anxiety disorders are extremely common amongst people who are addicted to alcohol.

Such people claim to be ?stressed? before they take to these bad habits. In fact, their addiction sets a vicious circle in motion. Continued abuse of drugs or other addictive substances may cause stress amongst people in turn.

Individuals who have no preexisting psychopathology problems as well as those persons who have a record of unpredictable or maladaptive style of conduct may suffer from substance-induced stress. On the other hand, these occurrences more often than not arise in individuals who have a preexisting sense of anxiety about drug use. Such individuals could be novices who know the much harm that alcohol or drugs could bring to their system. They may be falling into the habit repeatedly and may not have control over their ?desires?.

They may even be exceeding the proportions of consumption. These are the people who are most likely to be prone to substance-induced state of stress.

Stress may be less important in comparison to physical disorders like neurological disorders, cardiovascular diseases, endocrine disorders, and respiratory disorders. Such disorders get all the attention for being the causations of life threatening situations.

Few people tend to give importance to stress as a serious medical disorder. In fact, the concept of stress induced due to substance abuse is yet to set amongst those who may be regularly falling prey to such addictions. Stress may be caused by a regular use of drugs, such as alcohol, cocaine, stimulants, cocaine, and at times, many prescription drugs. Drug withdrawal may also result in a state of stress for many people. Some typical signs of substance induced stress are:

? The patient has increased levels of stress, compulsions, fixations or panic attacks.

? A careful physical examination of the patient or laboratory data validate that these symptoms either developed in a month of substance or medicine use or withdrawal of medicines or substance.

? No other plausible explanation could better account for this stress like symptoms.

? The symptoms cause clinically vital problems or mess up with the normal work routine, social or personal functioning of the patient.

? The symptoms do not come about only during a state of delirium.

In fact, out of the ?social drinkers and smokers? very few succumb to such an addictive phase in their life. However, it may be noted that these people definitely can if they are not careful and have a rather reckless attitude towards life.

Drug abuse is the most serious form of substance abuse and thus, the only way to avoid it is by not trying it at all. Substance abuse is a rather peculiar form and source of stress. The fact lies in the oddity surrounding its existence.

Stress itself can be thought of as a cause of making a person addicted to any of these substances. At the same time, an excessive usage of such addictive substances can also lead to stress. The solution to stress arising out of substance abuse lies in the fact that one can abstain from it.
