(AP) ? Occupy Wall Street protesters and state officials in Tennessee squared off for a third consecutive night Saturday, even though a local judge has consistently refused to jail the demonstrators.

The protesters have been galvanized by the friction between state officials and the local magistrate. Several new demonstrators showed up at the state-owned plaza near the Capitol for the first time earlier in the day.

Fifty to 75 people remained after the curfew that started at 10 p.m. CDT and runs until 6 a.m. Police did not immediately move in. In previous nights, the defiance has led to arrests.

The Nashville arrests came after a week of police crackdowns nationwide on Occupy Wall Street activists, who have been protesting economic inequality and what they call corporate greed.

Clashes have occurred in other cities, including Oakland, Calif., Denver and Atlanta.

"My heart has been here all along, but the arrests gave me the momentum to come," said Vicki Metzgar, 61, director of a Nashville Public Schools science and math initiative. "This (plaza) belongs to us, not the politicians."

In Oakland, Calif., an Iraq War veteran was seriously injured during a protest clash with police Tuesday night. In Atlanta, helicopters hovered overhead Wednesday as officers in riot gear arrested more than 50 protesters at a downtown park. In San Diego, police arrested a similar number of people who occupied the Civic Center Plaza and Children's Park for three weeks. And in Denver on Saturday evening, authorities moved into an encampment of protesters and began arresting demonstrators just hours after a standoff near the steps of the Colorado Capitol turned into a skirmish that ended in police force, including pepper spray and reports of rubber bullets.

Nashville magistrate Tom Nelson has said there's no legal reason in his city to keep the demonstrators behind bars and he has released them after each arrest. He has refused each night to sign off on arrest warrants for more than two dozen people taken into custody.

Some legal experts agreed with the judge.

The arrests appeared to be a violation of First Amendment rights that allow for people to peacefully assemble, said attorney David Raybin, a former prosecutor. He and others said the nature of the arrests, coupled with the judge's refusal to sign off on the warrants, could become ammunition for lawsuits.

"The government is exposing itself to serious liability here by doing this," Raybin said.

Nelson did not return an email seeking and a phone number for him could not be found.

State troopers began enforcing the curfew at the Legislative Plaza on Thursday night.

Others questioned the timing of the curfew. The protesters had been demonstrating for about three weeks before it took effect, a point that Nelson said he factored into his decision.

"You can't pass a curfew mid-protest because you disagree with this group of protesters," said criminal defense attorney Patrick Frogge, who is representing some of those arrested.

The state Department of Safety has been carrying out the arrests. Commissioner Bill Gibbons, who until he joined the Haslam administration was the district attorney in Memphis, said he didn't have a role in developing the curfew but assured Haslam his department could enforce it.

Gibbons developed a reputation as an able and tough prosecutor in Memphis, where gang and drug violence have been problems for years. He ran against Haslam for governor in the GOP primary, touting his law-and-order credential and sharply attacking his multi-million-dollar opponent for refusing to divulge how much income he gets from the family-owned chain of Pilot truck stops.

Cecily Friday, one of the original Occupy Nashville protesters, said the administration's attempt to get rid of the demonstrators has "completely backfired."

"Over 1,000 people have been added to our Facebook page since the arrests," she said.

On Saturday afternoon, about 150 people showed up for an Occupy Nashville meeting. Lisa Keylon, a city planner, was there for the first time. She said she was recently in Atlanta, discussing with friends how unorganized the protests seemed, wondering how long they could last.

Then people were arrested in Atlanta, followed by those in Nashville.

"Now people are fired up because their First Amendment rights are being violated," she said.

Among those arrested Friday night was journalist Jonathan Meador, who told troopers he was a reporter covering the story for the Nashville Scene alternative newspaper. On Saturday, the owner of the newspaper sent a letter to Haslam's staff.

"I expect the governor to publicly apologize to him for this violation of his rights and to assure the people of Tennessee that this administration will not interfere with the right to a free press that has been a fundamental right in this country since our founding," SouthComm CEO Chris Ferrell wrote. "I'm sure you understand that every media outlet in this country will vigorously defend our right to cover government action without fear of arrest or reprisal."

Gaza violence simmers after truce announced (Reuters)

GAZA (Reuters) ? Violence between Israel and Gaza militants flared anew Sunday after Egypt said it had brokered a truce to end attacks that have killed 10 Palestinian gunmen and an Israeli civilian in the past five days.

A ceasefire had appeared to be taking hold, with the frontier quiet for some eight hours, until Israeli aircraft attacked Palestinian militants who the military said were about to fire rockets from the southern Gaza Strip.

Medical officials in the enclave said one man was killed and another wounded, identifying them as members of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a group that rarely launches attacks against Israel.

Islamic Jihad and two smaller factions have claimed responsibility for rocket strikes against Israel since Wednesday. Islamic Jihad has close ties with Iran and has chafed at the rule of rival Hamas Islamists in the Gaza Strip.

An Islamic Jihad source, speaking several hours after the ceasefire was announced by Egyptian officials, said the group welcomed Cairo's efforts.

"If the (Israeli) aggression is stopped, we will abide by the calm," said Abu Ahmed, leader of Islamic Jihad's armed wing said.

Israel and Palestinian militants have used such language in the past in ceasing fire while stopping short of acknowledging any formal truce agreement.

"If someone rises up to kill you, kill him first," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in public remarks several hours before the latest air strike.

But he said Israel was "not eager for escalation."

DEADLY ATTACKS

The current round of cross-border violence began when residents of Israeli suburbs in the southern approaches to Tel Aviv were jolted awake Wednesday night by sirens usually sounded in towns and villages closer to the Gaza Strip.

The alert was triggered by what Israeli security sources said was an upgraded long-range Grad rocket that struck harmlessly near the Israeli port of Ashdod, leading to an Israeli air strike Saturday that killed five top Islamic Jihad militants in a Gaza training camp.

Five other militants have died in subsequent air attacks.

One of some 30 rockets and mortar bombs fired at Israel killed an Israeli man in the city of Ashkelon. Two other people were wounded.

"My interpretation is that these guys (Islamic Jihad) are keen to show off their clout, which has been built up recently," Yosef Kupperwasser, director-general of Israel's Strategic Affairs Ministry, told Reuters.

Israel kept schools shut in its southern region Sunday as a precaution against further rocket fire, while hundreds of thousands of civilians within 40 km (25 miles) of Gaza were urged to stay indoors.

Islamic Jihad released images of what it said was the firing by its men of a truck-mounted multiple rocket-launcher, a platform not previously seen in Gaza.

Israel says Gaza arsenals have been boosted by gun-running from Libya since the fall of its ruler, Muammar Gaddafi.

The violence erupted after weeks of a relative lull surrounding a prisoner swap on October 18 in which Israel released 477 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier held by Hamas since 2006.

Kansas grain elevator blast: 3 dead, 3 missing (AP)

ATCHISON, Kan. ? A thundering explosion rocked a Kansas grain elevator and shot a fireball so high it could be seen in neighboring Missouri, leaving three workers dead and three other people missing, authorities said Sunday.

Trey Cocking, city manager in the northeast Kansas town of Atchison, confirmed the deaths and said three others remain unaccounted for after Saturday night's blast at the Bartlett Grain Co. elevator, which shook homes and businesses all around. Authorities also reported injuries, but were still trying to get accurate information and notify families.

Cocking said authorities planned to bring in heavy equipment to dig through the rubble Sunday.

"Once we get light, we'll go from there," Cocking told The Associated Press as he left the site before dawn Sunday for a break after hours there. "From this point, they're going to have to do some excavation and bring in some crews."

The explosion could be seen and felt across Atchison, shaking homes and businesses up to four miles away. The cause was not immediately known, though grain elevator accidents can occur after grain dust becomes suspended in the air and turns explosive in the right conditions.

Bartlett Grain President Bill Fellows said in a statement that 11 workers were loading a train with corn when the explosion occurred about 7 p.m. Saturday. He said several of those 11 workers escaped injury, but that there were fatalities and some injuries.

Dennis McCulloch, spokesman for the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., had said Saturday that two victims were in critical condition in the hospital's burn unit. It's not clear whether those victims are among those now said to be dead. He did not immediately return AP's messages early Sunday seeking updates.

Randy Burton, who works at a Quick Stop East convenience store in Atchison about two miles from the elevator, said the explosion "shook our whole building."

"All I saw was a flash and then the building shook really good," Burton said. "Some things fell off our shelves."

Atchison has about 11,000 residents and is known as the birthplace of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.

Across the nearby Missouri River, a dispatcher at the sheriff's department in Buchanan County, Mo., said the office received numerous calls from alarmed residents saying they could hear the explosion deep into the county. Residents across the area said a fireball from the explosion could be seen well away from the site.

Fellows said Bartlett Grain workers remained at the elevator early Sunday and aiding authorities any way they could.

"The company's concern at this point is caring for those involved and their families," Fellows said. "We, of course, are in touch with all of the families of the Bartlett employees. We will share more information as it is discovered."

A news release from Atchison city officials said multiple injuries were reported, but that authorities were withholding details pending notification of families.

City officials said in the release that rescue operations "can be difficult because workers are often scattered throughout the facility, making them difficult to locate."

Units from several area police and firefighting agencies rushed to the site late Saturday, and fire crews pumped water onto the smoldering wreckage of the grain elevator for hours. Cocking said about 100 personnel joined in that work late Saturday night as authorities blocked access roads to the site.

The city statement also gave no preliminary indication of the cause. But it noted the risks that working with grains can pose.

"Stored grain can generate toxic gases or dangerous molds. Milled grain can be explosive under certain conditions," the statement noted.

Prevention of dust explosions, collapses, worker falls and deadly incidents of workers being engulfed by grain at elevators is an ongoing concern with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

An explosion at a grain elevator in Bartley, Neb., in April 2010, caused no injuries but sent workers scrambling out of the way, while another in Gothenburg, Neb., in December 2010, scattered debris over nearby railroad tracks and a highway, also without injuries, authorities reported at the time.

Elsewhere, explosions or fires were reported at two grain elevators in Illinois in 2010 while a fire burning at a grain elevator in the Toledo, Ohio, area in September 2010 forced people to evacuate from a nearby mobile home park and businesses as a precaution. There also have been explosions or fires at elevators in South Dakota and Louisiana that year, none of them fatal.

Authorities said two workers were killed in June 2010 when they were buried under a load of wheat at an elevator in the central Kansas town of Russell though no explosion occurred there.

Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter says 97 people living near the Hudson volcano will be evacuated and he is not ruling out the possibility of an eruption.

The Southern Andean Volcano Observatory says seismic activity related to the volcano increased starting early Tuesday night.

The Hudson volcano lies 995 miles (1,600 kilometers) south of Chile's capital, Santiago. It last erupted in August 1991, causing millions in damages to local farms and killing an estimated 1.5 million sheep.

Chile has about 3,000 volcanos, 500 of which are considered geologically active. Precautionary evacuations are not uncommon.

The Global Coal Trade's Complex Calculation

To feed China's insatiable demand for coal, U.S. companies are trying to sell and ship the lucrative commodity to the Asian market from new West Coast ports. Above, the cooling towers of a coal-fired power plant are seen on the outskirts of Beijing.

This is the second of two reports on plans to export U.S. coal to China.

Coal producers in Wyoming and Montana are hoping new export terminals will be built in Washington state so they can ramp up their sales to China. Activists are trying to stop those ports, in part because they're concerned about global warming. But a thriving export market could also drive up the price of coal here in the United States, and that has climate implications as well.

Energy economics can sometimes be like a hall of mirrors, where what you see is not actually what you get. Let's start this story from the top.

A 133-car coal train is loaded at the Buckskin Coal Mine in Gillete, Wyo. Each car carries 120 tons of coal. New terminals in Washington state could eventually be destinations for coal, which is currently used for power in St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago and the eastern U.S. Enlarge Robert Nickelsberg/Getty Images

Developers want to build a huge coal export terminal in Bellingham, Wash., and another one in Longview, on the south side of the state. K.C. Golden, at the nonprofit group Climate Solutions in Seattle, says this is a terrible idea for a state that is phasing out its lone coal-burning plant as it strives to become a leader in clean energy.

"Now, to become the conveyor belt and launching pad for a huge expansion of global carbon commerce would be exactly the opposite of the future we envision, the kind of economic strategy that we're doubling down on in the Northwest," he says.

Contrast that to what's happening in China, where they're still building new coal plants like crazy. Golden says coal exports would feed that beast.

"Our fear is that if there is an unlimited supply from around the world to fuel these new coal plants in Asia, that will act as a big green thumbs-up for them to build a whole new fleet of coal plants, and we'll essentially be locked into catastrophic climate change."

But U.S. coal exports to China would not be a game-changer. China's current appetite for coal is so massive that even if the two proposed U.S. terminals ended up exporting at full capacity ? that is, 100 million tons a year, or 10 percent of current production levels ? that would only satisfy 3 percent of China's appetite.

If the U.S. enters the global market in a bigger way in the future, the price of coal in the international market will increasingly affect our prices at home.

And here's where the first turn in the hall of mirrors comes. Bill Watson from the U.S. government's Energy Information Administration (EIA) says that right now, coal from Wyoming and Montana is mostly sold at a low price, since those are land-locked resources that can't reach the lucrative world market.

"But if the U.S. enters the global market in a bigger way in the future, the price of coal in the international market will increasingly affect our prices at home," Watson says.

The Coal Pricing Conundrum

The logic goes like this: If coal companies can sell coal for, say, $100 a ton on the world market, they will be less inclined to keep selling it for $20 a ton at home.

"Now, that's bad news if you're a consumer in Texas who buys electricity generated with Wyoming coal," says Trevor Houser, an energy analyst at the Rhodium Group in New York. "But it could potentially be good news for U.S. emissions, as an increase in coal prices domestically switches coal plants over to natural gas."

And when utilities switch to cheaper natural gas, they'll also emit less carbon dioxide, because natural gas is much better than coal in that regard.

So welcome to the central room in the hall of mirrors. Houser says if coal exports hasten our switch to natural gas, he figures that would essentially make up for any added fumes from American coal being burned in China. So he says it's a wash.

"I think what's more important is what it does to the politics of climate change in the U.S.," Houser says.

His window on politics is as a climate adviser to the Obama administration's State Department. He argues that coal companies might be more receptive to limits on U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide if they can sell less coal for more money overseas.

And there's one final illusion in this house of mirrors. Watson from the EIA notes that the world price for coal fluctuates widely, and right now, "the prices are relatively high. China has bid them up, and that's why producers are willing to enter the market. But it's going to attract other producers in other parts of the world also."

In particular, if Mongolia beefs up its railways, it can cheaply transport coal to China. China can then stop paying top dollar for coal that is currently shipped in from Australia, Indonesia and the United States. So the bottom could fall out of the U.S. export market faster than the companies can build the shipping terminals in Washington state.

In fact, that's exactly what happened in the 1980s, the last time coal prices skyrocketed. Some port cities scrambled to build coal terminals. Ross Macfarlane at Climate Solutions says companies and ports invested hugely in export terminals.

"One of those that did bite in that cycle was the port of Portland," Macfarlane says. "They locked up a very valuable piece of property for over 10 years ? planned, built a facility. Not a single lump of coal was ever shipped."

If that happens again, we're right back to where we started.

Myanmar's Suu Kyi could seek parliament seat (Reuters)

YANGON (Reuters) ? Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi might stand for parliament in an upcoming by-election after her party re-registers itself to enter politics, a party spokesman said.

Suu Kyi has been blocked from politics and detained for long stretches of time since returning to her homeland from abroad in 1988.

But after holding the first election in 20 years last November, Myanmar's military nominally handed power in March to a civilian government and it has introduced some reforms and started a dialogue with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi.

Her National League for Democracy (NLD) party was officially disbanded for refusing to take part in last year's election although it has continued to function.

NLD spokesman Nyan Win said the party was likely to get re-registered under an amended party law that drops clauses the party had objected to.

Asked if Suu Kyi herself would stand in a by-election after the party's re-registration, Nyan Win said: "I think she will and I personally want her to."

Asked by Reuters a month ago if she would stand in a by-election if the law was amended, the 66-year old Suu Kyi said she would have to get the approval of her party's central executive committee.

A set of by-elections is expected late this year.

Analysts say the government's reforms, including the recent release of about 200 political prisoners, are aimed at shedding Myanmar's pariah status and giving it some legitimacy with the international community, particularly the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), of which Myanmar is a member.

Since coming to power this year, the new government has stopped criticizing Suu Kyi and issuing veiled threats and instead sent an envoy, Labor Minister Aung Kyi, to meet her on three occasions. They are due to meet again on Sunday, government and party officials said.

Suu Kyi also had a meeting with President Thein Sein in the capital, Naypyitaw, in August.

Well-informed sources close to the government said the government wanted Suu Kyi and members of her party in parliament to give it legitimacy.

"They think the participation of some NLD lawmakers including Suu Kyi would surely help improve their image and legitimacy," said a retired senior diplomat.

Under the amended political party law, a clause barring anyone convicted of a crime from joining a party has been dropped.

Another change requires political parties to "respect and obey" a 2008 constitution instead of "preserve and protect."

Suu Kyi and other democracy activists objected to the constitution, drafted by a military-appointed convention, because it effectively enshrined the supremacy of the military in politics.

Adele To Return With Live Album, DVD In November

Release of Live at the Royal Albert Hall comes on the heels of singer canceling a slew of shows due to vocal issues.
By James Montgomery

Vocal problems may have forced Adele to scrap her U.S. tour, but next month, she'll return to the States ... with a live CD and DVD.

Due out November 29, Live at the Royal Albert Hall was recorded during Adele's rousing September show at the iconic London venue, and features her full 90-minute performance, which includes her biggest hits from the 19 and 21 albums, plus covers of Bonnie Raitt's "I Can't Make You Love Me" and the Steeldrivers' "If It Hadn't Been for Love." The film, directed by Paul Dugdale (who has previously worked with the Prodigy, Florence and the Machine and, of course, Adele herself), also contains exclusive behind-the-scenes content shot throughout the day.

The CD/DVD package is currently available for pre-order through Adele's website, and fans might want to pick it up, as it's probably the last time they'll get to see the British belter for a while. She's been battling vocal issues for months, first postponing her North American tour in June due to laryngitis, then rescheduling dates before announcing in early October that a vocal hemorrhage would force her off the road entirely.

Of course, none of that has slowed the success of her massive 21, which will once again top the Billboard albums chart next week and has sold more than 4 million copies in the U.S. alone since February. She's also one of the most-nominated artists at next month's American Music Awards (no word on whether she'll attend, though), and her latest single, "Someone Like You," currently sits atop the Billboard Hot 100.

Demi Lovato: Behind Her World Series National Anthem

We follow the singer as she returns to her hometown to sing the 'Star-Spangled Banner' and cheer the Texas Rangers to victory.
By Matt Harper

Demi Lovato sings the National Anthem prior to Game 5 of the 2011 World Series
Photo: MLB/Getty

Fifteen minutes before taking the field to sing the national anthem near her hometown of Dallas at Game 5 of the World Series, Demi Lovato admitted to MTV News just how nervous she was.

"I feel like I'm about to jump out of a plane," the young star confided nervously after warming up her vocals in a back room deep in the heart of Arlington, Texas' Rangers Ballpark. "Although this is a lot safer."

MTV News got the opportunity to spend the day with Demi as she prepped for the big moment. Minutes before stepping out in front of 51,000 people, she was cracking jokes, but it was plain to see that she was nervous — extremely excited, but definitely nervous.

Just seventeen minutes later, and Demi's smile said everything you needed to know about how her performance went. Standing on the field watching the 19-year-old belt out the notoriously difficult song, it was hard not to get swept up in the emotion of it all. Even before the end of the anthem, hitting a particularly difficult note in stride, the crowd erupted in premature cheering.

As fireworks erupted and the crowd stood cheering, Demi left the field smiling. As we walked through the back hallways of the stadium, we were stopped every few feet by fans, athletes and MLB officials telling Demi how amazing she had done. After posing for photos with a few fans, Demi was approached by Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp, who had also just left the field after being given the 2011 Hank Aaron Award as the most outstanding offensive player in the National League. Kemp took a moment to congratulate Demi and ask for a picture with her.

Finally back in the green room, Demi was able to stop and think back on the whirlwind 20 minutes. Her family and friends were all there to support her, and they gushed about seeing the performance on TV and how clearly moved the players and fans were. In the company of her support circle, Demi was able to relax and laugh and let the nervous energy of the day roll away. All that was left was to sit back and spend time with the people that she cared about the most — and cheer on the Rangers, of course.

We all traveled to our seats to watch the World Series game, and Demi sat in-between her aunt and one of her childhood friends, with other relatives and close friends flanking her on either side. For the next few hours, Demi got to watch the exciting game like the rest of the 50,999 fans in the stadium, eating popcorn and standing up to cheer as the Texas Rangers' Mike Napoli got the final out of the game to seal Texas' 4-2 win over the St-Louis Cardinals. A perfect end to a long and exciting day for Demi Lovato.

How did Demi do on the anthem? Let us know in the comments!

Lindsay Lohan to pose for Playboy?

By Courtney Hazlett

Nothing says "serious actress" like posing for a spread in Playboy. Lindsay Lohan has, according to TMZ, signed on to do just that in exchange for a nearly $1 million payday. Her rep is neither confirming nor denying the reports, so at the moment, we live in a world where this is an actual possibility.

Matteo Bazzi / EPA file

There are a couple points to raise here. First, this whole agreement, should it become a reality, doesn't come as a total surprise. Lohan is not the most modest of celebs -- we've seen A LOT of her skin as it is. The forum is just different here. There's also the Marilyn Monroe emulation syndrome at play -- Lohan has repeatedly aligned herself with the icon (and former Playboy model, herself). Her company 6126is named for Monroe's birth date, and remember when Lohan recreated Monroe's last nude photo shoot for New York magazine?

So there are pieces that fit ... but it doesn't make it a good idea, Lindsay! People trying to get their lives and careers back on track generally find it helpful to keep their clothes on. But as we know, Lohan doesn't always adhere strictly to the rules.

Down to the wire: Bieber and Selena adopt a puppy, Lindsay Lohan to pose nude in Playboy, MTV airing 'True Life' episode on Occupying Wall St., car hits one million miles and thieves steal a two and a half ton bell.

US assigns new task to Pakistan

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Pakistan will suffer ?dire consequences? if it fails to ?contain? terrorists operating from its soil, and it needs the US and Afghanistan to help get the job done.
The Obama administration isn?t asking Pakistan?s military to occupy its rugged border regions, the base for extremist groups that attack US, allied and Afghan forces on the other side, Clinton said in an interview with Bloomberg News posted on its website on Monday.
There are ?different ways of fighting besides overt military action,? she said.
Clinton said she pressed Pakistan to fully share intelligence with US forces in Afghanistan to prevent attacks and choke off money and supply routes. Better coordination might prevent incidents like the Sept 20 assault on the American Embassy in Kabul, which the US blames on the Haqqani network, she said.
?We can go after funding. We can go after couriers,?? she said she told Pakistani leaders.
Already strained ties with Pakistan were exacerbated by the US commando assault in May that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden near Islamabad. Clinton, along with CIA Director David Petraeus and General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, met with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the Army Chief of Staff, and Ahmad Shuja Pasha, head of the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate. Clinton praised recent cooperation against al-Qaeda as a model for how to crack down on the Haqqanis as well as the Taliban, based in Pakistan?s southwestern city of Quetta.
?Because of intelligence sharing and mutual cooperation, we have targeted three of the top al-Qaeda operatives since bin Laden?s death. That could not have happened without Pakistani cooperation,? she said.
Pakistan?s political parties came together last month behind a resolution to seek talks and a ceasefire with insurgents rather than an all-out military assault. Prime Minister Gilani urged the Americans ?to give peace a chance? before pressing his military for more, he said in a statement.
Clinton said the US message to Pakistan was that the same insurgents who have launched lethal attacks against US and Afghan targets may unleash their violence inside Pakistan.
Clinton said she urged Pakistan?s leaders to take advantage of the roughly 130,000-troop, US-led Nato force next door in Afghanistan while it?s still there. The US and Nato have begun pulling out troops and plan to hand full security control to Afghanistan?s government by the end of 2014.
In the coming months, forces from Pakistan and the coalition in Afghanistan should ?squeeze? the Taliban and allied extremists, such as the Haqqani network, which operate on both sides of the border.
?There?s no way that any government in Islamabad can control these groups,? Clinton said in an interview, conducted in Tajikistan as she wrapped up a seven-nation trip across the Mideast and south-central Asia.
There is an ?opportunity, while we are still with 48 nations across the border in Afghanistan, where we have a lot of assets that we can put at their disposal? to help Pakistan.
The Pakistanis said they ?have to figure out a way to do it that doesn?t cause chaos? in their country, she recounted. She said the US and Pakistan agreed on ?90 to 95 percent of what needs to be done? and the two countries will work on what ?next steps we take together.?
US and Afghan troops have recently begun what they call ?enhanced operations? against guerrillas in Afghanistan?s Khost province, which abuts the Pakistani region where the Haqqani network is based.
Asked if US troops in Afghanistan will launch cross-border attacks if Pakistan fails to act, Clinton replied, ?There?s a lot going on that is aimed at these safe havens, and we will continue to work with them on that.?
Clinton also defended US efforts to encourage the Afghans and Pakistanis to seek negotiations to disarm militants. Reconciliation efforts have gone nowhere since Clinton announced the Obama administration?s support for talks early last year.
Negotiations are ?a bumpy process? requiring ?patience and persistence that we?re willing to invest, in order to determine what?s real and what?s not,? she said.
