How long must we retain our payroll records? ? Business ...

Question: We have some very thick payroll files, so we?re wondering what we need to keep and for how long. We?d also like to confirm that time cards must be kept for seven years.

Answer: Tax data must be kept for the later of four years after the due date of the tax for the return period to which the records relate, or the date the tax is paid. But good record-keeping requires that records be kept for a much longer period of time.

The IRS has until the later of three years after a return was due or filed to assess additional taxes and penalties. After the assessment, it has an additional 10 years to begin the collection process.

Wage-and-hour data must be kept for three years (wage-and-hour and tax data are basically the same). Time cards, wage-rate tables, etc., should be kept for two years, but state laws may require you to keep records for longer periods of time.

MC Hammer: 'Not bitter' about arrest in Calif.

(AP) ? MC Hammer suggests he was a victim of racial profiling when he was stopped and arrested by police in the Northern California city of Dublin.

The '90s rap star tweeted on Saturday that an officer approached him in his car and asked "Are you on parole or probation?"

He says that as he handed over his ID, the officer reached inside the car and tried to pull him out.

Dublin police Lt. Herb Walters told the Oakland Tribune (http://bit.ly/YPesHt) that Hammer, who was born Stanley Burrell, was arrested Thursday for investigation of obstructing an officer in the performance of their duties and resisting an officer.

He declined to comment to KTVU about Hammer's version of the arrest.

Hammer tweeted that he wasn't bitter and considered what happened "a teachable moment."

Ex-Canada ambassador slighted by Affleck's "Argo"

TORONTO (AP) - The Canadian former ambassador to Iran who protected Americans at great personal risk during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis says it will reflect poorly on Ben Affleck if he doesn?t say a few words about Canada?s role if the director?s film ?Argo? wins the Oscar for best picture Sunday.

But Ken Taylor _ who said he feels slighted by the movie because it makes Canada look like a meek observer to CIA heroics in the rescue of six U.S. citizens caught in the crisis _ is not expecting it.

?I would hope he would. If he doesn?t than it?s a further reflection,? Taylor said. ?But given the events of the last while I?m not necessarily anticipating anything.?

Taylor kept the Americans hidden at the embassy in Tehran and facilitated their escape by getting fake passports and plane tickets for them. He became a hero in Canada and the United States after. The role he played in helping the Americans to freedom was not portrayed in the film.

?In general it makes it seem like the Canadians were just along for the ride. The Canadians were brave. Period,? Taylor said.

Affleck?s thriller is widely expected to win the best-picture trophy. Two other high-profile best-picture nominees this year, Kathryn Bigelow?s ?Zero Dark Thirty? and Steven Spielberg?s ?Lincoln,? have also been criticized for their portrayal of some factual issues.

Affleck said in a statement Friday night he thought his issue with Taylor had been resolved.

?I admire Ken very much for his role in rescuing the six houseguests. I consider him a hero.?In light of my many conversations as well as a change to an end card that Ken requested I am surprised that Ken continues to take issue with the film,? he said in a statement. ?I spoke to him recently when he asked me to narrate a documentary he is prominently featured in and yet he didn?t mention any lingering concerns.?I agreed to do it and I look forward to seeing Ken at the recording.?

Taylor noted that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter appeared on CNN on Thursday night and said ?90 percent of the contributions to the ideas and the consummation of the plan was Canadian,? but the film ?gives almost full credit to the American CIA.?

Carter also called ?Argo? a complete distortion of what happened when he accepted an honorary degree from Queen?s University in Canada in November.

?I saw the movie Argo recently and I was taken aback by its distortion of what happened because almost everything that was heroic, or courageous or innovative was done by Canada and not the United States,? Carter said.

Taylor said there would be no movie without the Canadians.

?We took the six in without being asked so it starts there,? Taylor said. ?And the fact that we got them out with some help from the CIA then that?s where the story loses itself. I think Jimmy Carter has it about right, it was 90 percent Canada, 10 percent the CIA.?

He said CIA agent Tony Mendez, played by Affleck in the film, was only in Iran for a day and a half.

The movie also makes no mention of John Sheardown, a deputy at the Canadian embassy who sheltered some of the Americans. Taylor said it was Sheardown who took the first call and agreed right away to take the Americans in. Sheardown recently died and his wife, Zena, called the movie disappointing.

Winter storm rakes Midwest with snow, freezing rain

People across the Midwest are digging out from the snow after a big storm passed through, resulting in difficult commutes and school closures. NBC's John Yang reports.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

A winter storm raked the Great Lakes states Friday, contributing to dozens of car crashes, and headed for the Northeast, which braced for its third straight weekend of significant snow.

The Weather Channel said parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan would end up with as much as 6 inches of snow.

In Minnesota alone, the State Patrol said there were 124 crashes during the morning commute, killing one driver and injuring 23, NBC affiliate KARE in Minneapolis reported.

Ice complicated travel in Ohio. In Cleveland, a United Airlines 737 skidded off the runway into grass and snow after landing from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. There were no reported injuries, and the passengers were taken by bus to the terminal.

The runway was in good condition at the time of the landing, said Jacqueline Mayo, a spokeswoman for the Cleveland airport. Freezing rain had just moved out of the area.

The winter storm is expected to move into the Northeast and deliver a third straight weekend of significant snow. Interior sections of New England could get as much as a foot.

Crews in Massachusetts, which has already exhausted its $45 million storm budget, readied piles of salt and sand and thousands of pieces of equipment, NBC affiliate WHDH in Boston reported.

Full coverage from weather.com

On Thursday, as the storm hammered the Plains, a United regional jet from Denver got stuck in the snow after landing at the airport in Wichita, Kan. Workers tried to clear a path so that buses could collect the passengers, but the tarmac was too slick, and the plane was stuck for about two hours.

Passengers said that flight attendants passed out cookies and that passengers and crew stayed upbeat.

Record snowfall in Wichita, Kansas, creates havoc at the airport where crews had to dig out a plane stuck on the tarmac. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

"By far the most entertaining delay I've ever had in my life," passenger Joshua Locke said. "This has just been laughable to me."

Wichita reported 14.2 inches of snow, the second-largest total on record there. More remote parts of Kansas got 18 inches. Omaha, Neb., reported 8 inches and Sioux City, Iowa, 10 inches.

On Friday, O?Hare airport in Chicago reported delays of an hour and a half, and Cincinnati reported more than 45 minutes. The airport in Kansas City, shut down earlier this week in heavy snow, reopened, but most morning flights were delayed. A handful of flights remained cancelled or delayed Friday evening.

In Cincinnati, a semi lost control on an icy overpass, leaving one wheel dangling over the edge. No one was hurt, but part of Interstate 71 was closed for a time, and the truck was leaking fuel, NBC affiliate WLWT in Cincinnati reported.

Earlier this week, the storm forced road closures in California and delays in a pro golf tournament in Arizona, where it dusted cactus-tops with snow.

The storm was blamed for at least two other deaths Wednesday. A 19-year-old Nebraska woman was killed in a two-car collision, and an 18-year-old man in Oklahoma died when his truck slid into a tractor-trailer on a slushy highway.

And the next storm was already on the way: Forecasters said it would sweep through the Rockies over the weekend, delivering up to a foot of snow to Colorado and up to 6 inches in Wyoming and Utah.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Much of the Midwest is covered in a blanket of white as a massive winter storm has covered parts of Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas with over a foot of snow. NBC's John Yang reports.

Smoking cessation in old age: Less heart attacks and strokes within 5 years

Thursday, February 21, 2013

Professor Hermann Brenner and colleagues analyzed the data of 8.807 individuals aged between 50 and 74 years using data of Saarland citizens. "We were able to show that the risk of smokers for cardiovascular diseases is more than twice that of non-smokers. However, former smokers are affected at almost the same low rate as people of the same age who never smoked," says Brenner. "Moreover, smokers are affected at a significantly younger age than individuals who have never smoked or have stopped smoking." For example, a 60-year-old smoker has the same risk of myocardial infarction as a 79-year-old non-smoker and the same risk of stroke as a 69-year-old non-smoker. Dose and duration of tobacco consumption also have an impact on disease risk. The more cigarettes a smoker consumes per day over a prolonged period of time, the higher his or her risk raises.

The study shows that the positive effect of smoking cessation becomes noticeable within a short period of time. "Compared to individuals who continue smoking, the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke is reduced by more than 40 percent already within the first five years after the last cigarette," says Carolin Gellert, first author of the study. The results suggest that smoking cessation programs, which have concentrated on younger participants up to now, should be expanded to reach out to older people as well.

Last year, Hermann Brenner and his colleagues had already studied the impact of smoking on the overall mortality of people beyond the age of 60. They had used data from international studies without German participation. In their latest study, they have evaluated data from the so-called ESTHER Study whose participants are from Saarland, a state of Germany. They included those individuals who had not suffered a heart attack or stroke prior to study start and whose health status had been surveyed for up to ten years afterwards. In their evaluation, the scientists also took account of the effects of other factors such as age, gender, alcohol consumption, education and physical exercise as well as blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol levels, body height and weight.

The Google Glass Team Is Just 50 People - Business Insider

Owen Thomas, Business Insider

Google Glass team member Isabelle Olsson shows off the headset at Google I/O.

?

Google Glass, the search giant's Internet-connected headset, is getting a lot of buzz outside the company.

It's also been getting a lot of buzz inside the company, with engineers and product people vying to get a spot on the team.

Google has even been dangling the prospect of working on Google Glass and other projects within the Google X skunkworks to restive engineers who are thinking of bolting the company.

But the Google Glass team is tiny?just 50 people, according to a source familiar with Google's recruiting efforts for Glass.

That's less than 0.1 percent of the company, which has about 55,000 employees, including Motorola.

The team has grown since Glass was unveiled at Google I/O last summer. At the time, its size was described as a "handful" of industrial designers and software engineers, and only a half-dozen or so employees even got to wear test units.

Now, LinkedIn shows 20 Google employees who list "Project Glass" on their profiles and 48 who mention "Google Glass." ("Project Glass" was the name for the earlier, experimental effort that led to the development of the Google Glass device.)

We asked Google about our source's claim.

"We don't generally comment on team sizes," Google spokesperson Jay Nancarrow told us.

Bloomberg recently reported that Apple's similar effort to develop wearable computers, the so-called "iWatch" project, has 100 people working on it.

Top of the Morning: Emergency Yellow Fever Campaign in Chad ...

Top stories from DAWNS Digest.

Chad is Launching Emergency Yellow Fever Campaign

Yellow fever is a deadly mosquito borne disease that is easily spread. An outbreak would be very, very dangerous. ?The Ministry of Health of Chad is launching an emergency mass-vaccination campaign against yellow fever from 22 February 2013, following laboratory confirmation of two cases in the country in December 2012. The two cases from Goz Beida and Guereda districts, were laboratory confirmation by a WHO regional reference laboratory for yellow fever, Institut Pasteur in Dakar, Senegal. They were identified through the national surveillance programme for yellow fever, following intensive surveillance which was triggered in response to the outbreak of yellow fever in neighbouring Sudan?s Darfur region. The intensive surveillance in Chad also reported 139 suspected cases and 9 deaths.? (WHO http://bit.ly/VXxLxO)

Bienvenue to the Counter-Insurgency

Two suicide bombings last week have spurred the French to commence with a counterinsurgency campaign. ?The house-to-house searches, sandbagging of fixed defensive positions and reliance on tip-offs from locals already have the hallmarks of an arduous counter-guerrilla operation. The need to secure Gao, hundreds of kilometers behind the French forward lines where commandos are hunting for French hostages believed to be held in rebel mountain hideouts, is robbing momentum from France?s five-week-old campaign?the recent Gao attacks, French spokesmen are increasingly having to fend off suggestions that the 4,000 French soldiers in Mali could risk getting mired in a long and debilitating war, in a tough and hostile battleground.? GOP senator says she'll oppose Hagel confirmation

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A moderate Republican senator said Wednesday she'll oppose the confirmation of Chuck Hagel to become President Barack Obama's secretary of defense, while other GOP senators signaled they may delay a floor vote on the nomination unless the White House provides more information about the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, had been viewed as a possible supporter of Hagel, but she said Wednesday that his views on the most critical threats facing the United States are "unsettling."

In a four-page statement, Collins said Hagel was unwilling to ask the European Union to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization in 2006, and he has been hesitant to back the use of all non-military options, such as unilateral sanctions, to pressure Iran into ceasing its nuclear program.

As Collins voiced her opposition, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., set the stage on Wednesday for a full Senate vote on Hagel's nomination. Reid filed a motion to limit debate and force a vote, which is expected to be held on Friday. Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and have the numbers to confirm Hagel on a majority vote, but would need the support of five Republicans to clear the way for an up-or-down vote on Hagel.

A bitterly divided Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday voted to approve Hagel by a 14-11 vote, with all the panel's Democrats backing him to succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. The committee's Republicans were unified in their opposition to their onetime colleague, a former two-term Republican senator from Nebraska and twice-wounded Vietnam combat veteran.

"I am unable to support Senator Hagel to be the next secretary of defense because I do not believe his past positions, votes, and statements match the challenges of our time, and his presentations at his (confirmation) hearing did nothing to ease my doubts," Collins said. "I regret having to reach that conclusion given our personal relationship and my admiration for Senator Hagel's military service. But I have concluded that he is not well-suited for the tremendous challenges our country faces during this dangerous era in our history."

Collins said she would not join in a filibuster to block a final vote.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Wednesday that he would vote against ending debate on Hagel's nomination to be defense secretary because he wants more information on Obama's actions on the night of the Sept. 11 raid on the mission in Benghazi. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died in the Sept. 11 raid.

Graham, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., wrote to Obama on Tuesday and asked whether he spoke to any Libyan government official during the assault.

"There seems to not be much interest to hold this president accountable for a national security breakdown that led to the first ambassador being killed in the line of duty in over 30 years," Graham said. "No, the debate on Chuck Hagel is not over. It has not been serious. We don't have the information we need. And I'm going to fight the idea of jamming somebody through until we get answers about what the president did personally when it came to the Benghazi debacle."

McCain declined to say Wednesday whether he would try to filibuster or delay Hagel's confirmation if Obama did not provide an answer. "My position right now is I want an answer to the question," he said.

After the committee vote, McCain said he did not want a filibuster of Hagel's nomination. "We have not filibustered a Cabinet appointee in the past and I believe that we should move forward with his nomination, bring it to the floor and vote up or down," he said.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said he's confident the White House will supply the information and that Hagel will be confirmed.

Young Afghan musicians in NY for date at Carnegie

SCARSDALE, N.Y. (AP) ? For these young people from Afghanistan, it's the perfect trip to America. They get to scarf down New York pizza, go ice skating ? and take the stage at Carnegie Hall.

The Afghan Youth Orchestra, many of whose members are not far removed from eking out a living on the streets of Kabul, is on the New York leg of a U.S. tour that melds Western classics with traditional Afghan music.

About 50 players held a joint rehearsal Monday with 25 members of the Scarsdale High School orchestra, which meant that young musicians from a war-torn country where music was banned for several years by the Taliban were playing alongside those from one of New York's toniest suburbs.

"This is all providing a model for the future of Afghanistan," said William Harvey, the Afghan orchestra's American conductor and arranger. "The recomposed music, taking the best from both worlds, and the cooperation between the Afghan kids and the Scarsdale kids, shows what has to happen for Afghanistan."

Among the pieces rehearsed in advance of Tuesday night's Carnegie program were adaptations of Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" and Ravel's "Bolero," both incorporating Afghan instruments and rhythms.

A handful of people in the Scarsdale auditorium got to hear familiar melodies perked up with such instruments as the sitar, dilruba and ghichak. Some of the Afghan musicians were barefoot.

"I love the 'Bolero,'" said Milad Yousofi, 18, a pianist from Kabul who, like the rest of the orchestra, attends the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, which was founded just three years ago.

Yousofi is hoping the orchestra's U.S. visit ? it played in Washington last week and is headed for Boston ? will help him find a way to continue his musical education in America.

"I'm very excited and amazed that we are going to Carnegie Hall," he said. "New York is my dream city. I want to come here as soon as possible. But then I want to go back to Afghanistan and teach."

Hojat Hameed, 21, a violinist who also plays electric guitar in a rock band, said he became interested in music when he heard a Celine Dion recording.

"That made me want to become a musician," he said. "I could feel I wanted to come home to music."

Some of the Afghans may have been saved from desperate lives by the music school.

"One of my violinists used to sell chewing gum on the street," said Harvey, who spoke to the musicians in English and Dari, one of Afghanistan's two main languages. "She had to. The Taliban had beaten her father paralyzed and he couldn't work."

"The return of music to Afghanistan is a victory of the human spirit," Harvey said.

Ahmad Sarmast, who founded the school, said hearing the orchestra play was "a touching experience."

"The Taliban deprived children of their music," he said. "It was like a genocide of music. Now this is an incredible way of showing pride in our people, our youth, our school, our country."

He said the school, which is funded by the World Bank and others, is free and provides enough of a stipend to keep the musicians off the streets. And it accepts boys and girls, another reversal of Taliban orders.

Amedee Williams, who heads the Scarsdale music program, said he heard last year that the Afghan school was trying to raise funds for a tour. He contacted the school and suggested their orchestra members could save on New York hotels by staying with Scarsdale families. That turned out not to be necessary, but it forged a partnership that resulted in the Scarsdale orchestra joining the Afghans at Carnegie Hall.

Before the joint orchestra rehearsed on Sunday, he said, all the youngsters had pizza. Afterward, they went ice skating, which was a new activity for the Afghans "and some of the Scarsdale kids," Williams said.

"There was a lot of hand-holding, supporting each other," he said. "It was good to see."

Gun victims, academics join Senate firearms clash

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A woman whose Chicago police officer brother was fatally shot in 2010 says it's time for Congress to pass laws keeping guns from criminals. Another woman says firearms restrictions prevented her from protecting her parents when they were killed in a 1991 mass shooting in a Texas restaurant.

The two were among several witnesses taking opposing sides Tuesday as the Senate holds its second hearing on gun curbs since December's shooting deaths of 20 first-graders in Newtown, Conn. This time, a Senate Judiciary subcommittee is examining the constitutionality and effectiveness of federal firearms limits.

"We need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and those who are mentally unstable," the subcommittee's chairman, Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said in a brief interview Monday. "I hope everyone will acknowledge that within our Constitution is not only an individual right to bear arms, but the collective right of Americans to be safe."

A Republican on the panel, Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, said existing gun laws are not being effectively enforced. He cited the often ignored requirement that states make mental health records available to the federal background check system.

"I'm still interested in somebody identifying which of these laws would have prevented any of these horrific incidents," Cornyn said Monday. "I'm not interested in just doing something that's symbolism."

President Barack Obama wants Congress to enact new curbs, including bans on assault weapons and large-capacity ammunition magazines and a requirement that all gun buyers be subject to background checks, not just sales by federally licensed dealers. Obama is expected to push anew for his plans in his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

Most Democrats have been more receptive to Obama's proposals than Republicans, most of whom ? along with the National Rifle Association ? have opposed the president's plan.

The universal background check has the broadest support and is expected to be a centerpiece of legislation Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., hopes to write in the next few weeks. The assault weapons ban is given little chance of enactment, and passage of a ban on large-capacity magazines also seems doubtful.

Other witnesses testifying Tuesday included Timothy J. Heaphy, the Obama-appointed U.S. attorney for the western district of Virginia, and two legal experts.

In prepared testimony, Suzanna Gratia Hupp described being in Luby's restaurant in Killeen, Texas, when a gunman crashed his truck through the front window, emerged and fatally shot 23 people, including her parents, and wounded many others. Hupp says she had left her gun in her car because Texas law barred her from bringing it into the restaurant.

"I can't begin to get across to you how incredibly frustrating it is to sit there, like a fish in a barrel, and wait for it to be your turn, with no hope of defending yourself," said Hupp, now a Republican Texas state official and gun rights advocate.

She added, "The only thing the gun laws did that day was prevent good people from protecting themselves."

Taking a different view was Sandra J. Wortham, whose brother, Thomas E. Wortham IV, was shot dead outside their parents' home by robbers, though he and his father, a retired police sergeant, fired back.

"The fact that my brother and father were armed that night did not prevent my brother from being killed," Wortham said in prepared testimony. "We need to do more to keep guns out of the wrong hands in the first place. I don't think that makes us anti-gun. I think it makes us pro-decent, law-abiding people."

Laurence H. Tribe, the liberal Harvard Law School professor, said in his prepared testimony that nothing Obama has proposed "even comes close to violating the Second Amendment" right to bear arms.

Tribe said more sweeping proposals to take guns away from citizens "have been decisively taken off the table" by Supreme Court rulings in 2008 and 2010 that overturned handgun bans by the District of Columbia and other state and local governments.

Differing from Tribe was attorney Charles J. Cooper, who has long defended gun rights and represented the NRA.

Cooper said those same Supreme Court rulings "establish that the Second Amendment guarantees a fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms." He said Obama's proposed assault weapon and high-capacity magazine bans were unconstitutional because gun rights "cannot be circumscribed by appeal to countervailing government interests."

Highlighting the political appeal of the gun fight, numerous Democrats were inviting people affected by gun violence to sit in the visitors' galleries during Obama's nationally televised State of the Union speech. One GOP lawmaker invited Ted Nugent, the aging rock-and-roller and vocal gun-rights supporter.

Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the Arizona Democrat shot in the head two years ago in Tucson, and her husband, Mark Kelly, will attend the address. Earlier in the evening, the two scheduled a fundraising event for their new political action committee, Americans for Responsible Solutions, which favors firearms curbs.

LG makes Korean Optimus G Pro with 5.5-inch display officially official

Android Central

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

Some official information was released just earlier today on the larger Optimus G Pro headed to Korea, and now LG has spilled the beans on the new version of the device. This Optimus G Pro, which from the press images has quite a striking design, will come with the aforementioned 5.5-inch 1080x1920 display on the front and a slightly redesigned back. The back plate is using a similar square pattern from the original Optimus G, but with a curved glass covering that LG says creates a "2.5D" effect.

As for the internals, we're a little low on specifics at this point. LG is saying that device will have a quad-core processor along with the new, larger HD display and doesn't give much more information beyond that. LG is giving a release window of late February for the device in Korea, and until then we can at least drool over these great press images. We'd expect to get a look at the device come MWC in a couple weeks as well.

Northeast snowstorm blamed for deaths of 18 people

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? The massive weekend snowstorm that clobbered parts of the Northeast and Canada is being blamed for at least 18 deaths.

The epic storm swept through on Friday and Saturday with 1 to 3 feet of snow that entombed cars and sealed up driveways. Several people died from carbon monoxide poisoning while sitting in snowed-in vehicles.

Schools remained closed across much of New England and New York on Monday. And more than 100,000 homes and businesses are still waiting for the electricity to come back on. About 650,000 customers had been without power, most of them in Massachusetts.

Marshfield, Mass., residents Jim and Brenda Stewart have been using their fireplace to stay warm. They say New Englanders just hunker down and do it.

Studio 1050...: New info in the family tree

I may have some new info on my immigrant ancestor, Johann Hinrich L?bker and his first wife, Christine Meier, courtesy of a guy named Brendon on the Ancestry.com message board for Erie County, New York.

Johann Hinrich--or Hinrich, as he usually appears in the census and other documents--immigrated from Schleswig-Holstein in 1846, and according to the 1899 Compendium of Biography, he was a "prosperous shoemaker for many years" in New York.

We know he was in New York state until 1855, when he and his family--wife Rosine Klein and eldest daughter Rosina C--moved to Wisconsin. According to my cousin Kathryn, he lived at least part of the time in Eden, New York, south of Buffalo in Erie County. Apparently he's listed in the records of the Evangelical Lutheran church there, although I haven't been able to raise an answer about that from anyone at the church just yet.

Kathryn also had info from my dad that somehow had eluded me: Hinrich had a first wife who came over from Schleswig with him, named Christine Meier. She died in Buffalo in 1853 of "Bright's disease," a chronic kidney condition now known as nephritis. That info is from a death certificate either Kathryn or my father had.

But until recently, I hadn't been able to locate any other information in any online records about Hinrich, Rosine or Christine during their time in New York. With as many as nine years to account for, that seemed odd.

So I posted an inquiry on Ancestry and hoped for the best. Over the weekend I got a reply:

New York, State Census, 1855, Erie, Boston
Image 8 of 33
Years residing in this city or town - 5
Henry Lipker age 51, b. Germany, Shoemaker, Alien, owner of land
Rosina age 32, b. Germany
Catherine age 10/12 - puts birth Aug. 1854, Erie

Boston is another small community south of Buffalo and east of Eden. (Hey, sounds like a good name for a book!) "Henry" obviously is an Angicization of Hinrich, and "Lipker" is both the phonetic spelling of the name as my family pronounces it, and the way the family's name was (mis)spelled in the 1860 US Census. This guy seems to be the only shoemaker listed in the town (and it was a small place in 1860--only 46 pages in the census) and my great great grandfather was a shoemaker.

According to this information, Henry and his family had been living there for five years, his wife is Rosina (same as Hinrich's second wife) and his daughter's birth month matches up with that of Rosine and Hinrich's eldest daughter, Rosina C. Given the German fashion of calling people by their middle names, the "Catherine" in the record could easily be Rosina C(atherine). "Henry Lipker" was still classified as an alien in 1855--Hinrich wasn't naturalized until 1857.

Based on all of that, I'm willing to call this a match.? I believe "Henry Lipker" is Hinrich L?bker, my great great grandfather.

Now here's where it gets interesting. There's also a shoemaker listed in Boston (Erie County), New York in the 1850 U.S. Census. He has the right birth year, a wife named Christine (same as Hinrich's first wife) who has the right birth year, and they have a 16-year-old son (!!) named Christian, who came over with them.

?

The shoemaker in the 1850 census has the same neighbors (what looks like "Kester") as "Henry Lipker" in the 1855 NY Census. The guy in 1850 owns the property on which he lives, and in the 1855 New York Census, "Henry Lipker" had owned his property for five years.
?

The the only real problem is the guy in the 1850 US Census is named "Andrew Lepty" (or "Lipty").

But again, as near as I can tell, he's the only shoemaker in that small town.

?
This one is less certain, but I'm willing to accept it. And if this IS my great great grandfather, then his having a son named Christian bridges a gap I've had in my tree for years.?

?

There's a Christian Luebker in my tree who was born in Schleswig in 1833, but for whom neither I nor anyone I've invited to join my family tree can identify parents. The "Christian Lepty" in the 1850 census posits a birth year of 1834, but he also could have been born in 1833, having already celebrated his 16th birthday in the last half of 1849, well before June 1, 1850, the official date of the census.

?

Anyway, if this IS the same Christian L?bker/Luebker who ended up starting a family in Chicago, it may explain why my grandfather moved there for a while and could link my branch of the L?bker/Lubker/Luebker family to a branch where we previously knew of no connection.

I have the Ancestry DNA test kit waiting for me at home--I guess I better send in the sample and see if that helps shed any light!

All-in-one Card Reader for iPad - USD$32.90

New Update: By popular demand, the finishing of the Card Readers for all new orders will be Matte instead of Glossy!?

?

Check out the full review at M.I.C Gadget!?

?

The original CF Card Reader for iPad was first introduced by M.I.C Gadget exclusively for DSLR camera users. It was featured by many top Photography and Tech sites such as RobGalbraith, PhotographyBlog, Engadget, Gizmodo, Wired, SlashGear, Photojojo etc.

?

We have now improved the card reader to support iOS 5.1 on The New iPad. It also comes with both SD and CF Card slots packed within its familiarly slim profile - two key functions for the price of one!

?

The new Card Reader has been tweaked to be able to overcome the Voltage Limit set by the iPad and hence supports even 600X CF Cards and Class 10 / UHS-I SD Cards. We have tested the Card Reader with SanDisk Extreme Pro CF and SD Cards with no issues - without any external power required.

?

However, we are aware that there are many other memory card brands in the market and around the world. Some of them might have power requirements beyond what the iPad can provide even without the Voltage Limit. The new Card Reader has an added power input port that can be optionally used for the extra juice these cards need to work.

More coincidence than conspiracy at fashion week

NEW YORK (AP) ? During every season of designer previews at New York Fashion Week a few key, quirky items seem to pop up on different runways. They're not quite trends since one has to think they're partly for runway effect not retail orders, but they're part of the style zeitgeist nonetheless.

This time there were fur mittens ? oversized like boxer mitts ? at Alexander Wang and Altuzarra. What were the odds? And how does the ball start rolling on items such as oversized fur mittens, harnesses or sleeveless coats?

It's safe to say designers don't take a meeting together to decide what direction to go in.

"The honest answer is some of it is plain and simple coincidence," said Cindi Leive, editor in chief of Glamour magazine. "These designers are creating hundreds of looks over the course of a season. It would be more unusual if there were no overlap."

Still, she said, there also are fashion cycles and sociological factors to consider as catwalk collections are prepared.

Take fur ? both real and fake. Leive said Sunday it has been on every runway so far on this fourth of eight days of fashion week.

After the recession, no one was touching fur, she said, but it has slowly made a comeback as people feel a little more comfortable about spending money. The interpretation this go-around has been impactful, with an emphasis on oversized unexpected fur touches such as hoods, handbags and boots, but they're not as expensive as a full-length coat.

It's important for fashion insiders to be aware of what's happening in other parts of culture, including politics and art, said Marie Claire executive editor Nina Garcia earlier in the week as she prepared to judge aspiring designers at "Project Runway."

"Successful designers soak it all in," she said.

Fashion week continues in New York through Thursday, when the influential Marc Jacobs closes out things. Runway previews then move on to London, Milan and Paris.

VICTORIA BECKHAM

The opening look at Victoria Beckham's show was a windowpane plaid coat. She also incorporated more sweaters and knits into her collection, with a nod to mod with some geometric, colorblocked shift dresses.

The most unexpected looks were the flashes of bright yellow, including a sleeveless trench; the techno shine she added to pleated skirts that the audience could only see as the models walked; and the long cape-style tuxedo coat.

One of the important evolutions for fall is the softer shoulder, which she used to tweak one of her popular zip-back, slim-fit dress silhouettes.

For shoes, she put models in lower kitten heels, made in collaboration with Manolo Blahnik, which was a bit of a surprise for a woman known for skyscraper stilettos.

"I'm always designing what I want to wear," she said.

DEREK LAM

Derek Lam says a navy-black mix is one of his favorite combinations.

"There's something very unpretentious about navy, and black is very crisp and stark. The navy breaks up the black. And black gives the navy an urban feel," the designer said backstage after his fall-winter preview on Sunday.

Lam paired a navy-and-white satin top with a black wool trouser. A navy-and-gray wool jersey T-shirt came with a navy-and-black jacquard trouser, plus black shoes and bag. A felt coat came in navy, black and white wool, covering an ivory lace dress.

Another big color on Lam's runway this season: luxurious camel. A classic, loose coat in camel cashmere opened the show, and a roomy cashmere duffle coat looked glamorous with sunglasses of the same color. Camel was also used for a wool cashmere pullover, a wool-and-cashmere dress and a big boucle cape.

Capes in general were a popular item. One particularly nice look was an elbow-length black leather cape that tied in front.

A red, knee-length fox fur vest, paired with wine-colored flat boots, was by far the most flamboyant item in the show. A shorter, navy fox vest was more understated and in line with the rest of the collection. It was paired with a navy crochet dress and brown ankle boots.

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

The "Project Runway" alum used the Russian opera as the inspiration for his fall runway show, using a book of Russian opera houses as reference.

The girl wearing this collection, he said, was on her way to see the Russian opera.

"I wanted it to be a story of what she wears during the day, what she'll wear for a cocktail dress, what she'll wear to the opera," he said.

His vintage-inspired day looks evoke many eras, from the 1940s to the 1960s, and were mostly separates of turtlenecks paired with loose leather trousers and faux fur vests in muted colors such as white, black and camel.

One ensemble included a pointed-toe flat in a penny loafer style, a surprise inclusion given fashion's love for the high heel. Siriano explained it as a way to ensure its wearability, and also because he "wanted it to be a bit more demure, a bit simple."

Other shoes in the collection included bootie heels and heeled penny loafers with gold trim, echoing the filigree that anchored many of the evening dresses that closed the show.

JOSEPH ALTUZARRA

Joseph Altuzarra's urban, confident, fashion-forward customer wears graphic black-and-white leather ? layers it on, in fact ? and then there's the fox or mink fur on top. She's not shy about drawing attention in fur mittens, shiny grommet embellishment and strategically placed zippers. She wears her high-waisted trousers with a low-slung belt.

His fall-winter collection also includes optic white pants and a khaki cotton sleeveless trench worn with a khaki four-button tailored skirt.

The silhouette he offers his customers is strong and slim, sometimes with a little bump at the hip.

"The design and construction emphasize the nip of the waist and exaggerate the hip, while shrunken proportions mixed with a bolder shoulder volume sharpen the classic silhouette," he says in describing the shape.

Hubble catches a streak of stars in side-on view of spiral galaxy

Feb. 10, 2013 ? The Hubble Space Telescope captured a thin, glittering streak of stars in a new view of the spiral galaxy ESO 121-6, which lies in the southern constellation of Pictor (The Painter's Easel).

Viewed almost exactly side-on, the intricate structure of the swirling arms is hidden, but the full length of the galaxy can be seen -- including the intense glow from the central bulge, a dense region of tightly packed young stars sitting at the center of the spiral arms.

Tendrils of dark dust can be seen across the frame, partially obscuring the bright center of the galaxy and continuing out towards the smattering of stars at its edges, where the dust lanes and shapes melt into the inky background. Numerous nearby stars and galaxies are visible as small smudges in the surrounding sky, and the brightest stars are dazzlingly prominent towards the bottom left of the image.

ESO 121-6 is a galaxy with patchy, loosely-wound arms and a relatively faint central bulge. It actually belongs to a group of galaxies, a clump of no more than 50 similar structures all loosely bound to one another by gravity. The Milky Way is also a member of a galactic group, known as the Local Group.
