Alibaba hires U.S. lobbying firm as it eyes Yahoo (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Alibaba Group has hired a Washington lobbying firm in a sign that the Chinese e-commerce company would be willing to make a bid for all of Yahoo Inc in the event that talks to unwind their Asian partnership fail.

Japan's Softbank Corp, which owns a 30 percent stake in Alibaba and is a partner in Yahoo Japan, is also listed as an Alibaba affiliate in the disclosure by the lobbying firm, Duberstein Group Inc.

Alibaba Group's founder, Jack Ma, said in September he was keen to buy all of Yahoo if the opportunity presented itself.

Hiring a Washington lobbying firm could help Alibaba address any U.S. political opposition to a complete takeover of Yahoo by a company from a country that controls and censors the Internet.

Chinese companies, such as telecoms giant Huawei Technologies Co, have run into opposition when they have tried to buy U.S. assets over the years.

"The national security concern is sometimes just an excuse for commercial concerns for any country, but certainly for the United States," said Mark Natkin, managing director of Beijing-based consultancy Marbridge Consulting. "I don't think there should be a big concern (for Alibaba buying Yahoo). Users may share or keep as much data as they like.

"If they subscribe to Yahoo and (they know) Yahoo is owned by a Chinese company, they are going to have to make the decision themselves," Natkin added.

Alibaba, Softbank and Yahoo have been looking to unwind their complex web of relationships. Alibaba retained Duberstein in the fall when it was discussing a proposal with private equity firms to carve up Yahoo, a source familiar with the situation said.

While they would jointly make a bid for the whole company, the idea was for the buyout firms to take over Yahoo's U.S. operations and for Alibaba and Softbank to get the Asian assets.

But a buyout of Yahoo has now been put on the backburner as the U.S. Internet company is considering a proposal to address just the Asian assets that Alibaba and Softbank want. That plan, valued at roughly $17 billion, would reduce Yahoo's 40 percent stake in Alibaba and get Yahoo out of Yahoo Japan, sources told Reuters last week.

Yahoo is exploring proposals to revamp its business in the face of competition from Internet heavyweights such as Google Inc and Facebook.

Investors have long said Yahoo's investment in Alibaba, along with its 35 percent slice of Yahoo Japan, are far and away the U.S. company's most prized assets. Yahoo has a market value of around $20 billion.

Earlier in December, Thomson Reuters publication Basis Point reported that a handful of lenders are considering committing to a $4 billion loan for Alibaba that will help it buy back part of the 40 percent stake that Yahoo owns in the company.

LOBBYING FIRM

The filing marks the first time Alibaba has registered to lobby the U.S. government, according to a search of congressional records.

The Duberstein Group is headed by Kenneth Duberstein, a former White House chief of staff under U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Its other clients include BP America Inc, Goldman Sachs & Co and Pfizer Inc.

The lobbying registration lists the law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, which specializes in mergers and acquisitions, as an intermediary between Alibaba and the company's lobbying team.

The registration was received by a U.S. Senate office on Dec 23 and then posted online, but the lobbying work likely began earlier.

Under U.S. law, a lobbying firm is required to file a public disclosure within 45 days of crossing certain thresholds such as making contact with a public official. The filing for Alibaba says it is effective as of December 1.

Messages left with the Duberstein Group and Wachtell were not immediately returned on Wednesday.

LG unveils 84-inch 'ultra definition' 4K TV it's bringing to CES 2012

LG let us know at CES 2011 that it had 4K LCD televisions in the pipeline, but unfortunately they didn't make it out this year. Expect for that to change in 2012, as the company just announced it's bringing an 84-inch "ultra definition" (3840x2160) TV to Las Vegas to go along with its 55-inch OLED. It has all of LG's Cinema 3D and Smart TV features built-in, including support for that upgraded Magic Motion remote and voice control. There's no official word yet on when we'll see these on shelves or at what price, but it certainly looks production ready compared to other prototypes that have been displayed over the years. While we don't have easy sources of 4K-res video content yet, one of the reasons LG is making the jump first is for 3D. Its Cinema 3D tech uses a Film Pattern Retarder (FPR) screen and passive glasses that result in lowered resolution, but with those extra pixels there's no question about whether viewers are still getting at least an HD picture. So far 4K at home is the domain of Sony and JVC's high-priced projectors, but we'll see if any other companies (we'll check off Toshiba right now) show off upgrades in size and resolution of their HDTVs this year. Check the press release after the break for a few more details.

Thomas Sowell: Gingrich for president

posted at 10:04 pm on December 28, 2011 by Allahpundit

A grudging endorsement, but sufficiently esteemed that it deserves a little publicity.

The fact that each of the short-lived front-runners in the Republican field gained that position by presenting themselves as staunch conservatives suggests that Republican voters may have been trying to avoid having to accept Mitt Romney, whose record as governor of Massachusetts produced nothing that would be regarded as a serious conservative achievement.

Romney?s own talking point that he has been a successful businessman is no reason to put him into a political office, however much it may be a reason for him to become a successful businessman again?

Much depends on whether you think the voting public is going to be more interested in Newt Gingrich?s personal past than in the country?s future. Most of the things for which Gingrich has been criticized are things he did either in his personal life or when he was out of office. But, if we are serious, we are more concerned with his ability to perform when in office?

There are no guarantees, no matter whom the Republicans vote for in the primaries. Why not vote for the candidate who has shown the best track record of accomplishments, both in office and in the debates? That is Newt Gingrich. With all his shortcomings, his record shows that he knows how to get the job done in Washington.

According to RCP, Newt hasn?t cracked 20 percent (or even 18 percent) in any of the last five Iowa polls. That doesn?t mean he?s sunk ? he?s still the logical alternative for an undecided in the Not Romney and Not Paul camps ? but I?ll never understand why he let so many negative ads go unchallenged. He was famous for scorched-earth politics when he was in the House, yet when he finally got his second look as a presidential contender, he turned into a nice-ish guy. It?s probably too late now.

Here?s his new nice-guy ad. Exit quotation from former GOP Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, discussing her vote in 2003 on the Medicare prescription drug bill: ?Newt called me to vote yes.?

What to look for at NKorea funeral for Kim Jong Il (AP)

Wailing and sobbing, mourners beat their chests and dropped to their knees as North Korean President Kim Il Sung's hearse crawled through the streets of Pyongyang in 1994, draped with a red flag and bedecked with white magnolias.

But even as they cried out on a hot summer's day for the leader they called "Father," they began pledging their loyalty to his son, leader-in-waiting Kim Jong Il, who cut a solemn and somber figure in a dark blue suit, a black band wrapped around his left arm.

Same setting, different season: Similar shows of grief are expected when North Korea lays Kim Jong Il to rest in a winter chill during two days of funeral ceremonies on Wednesday and Thursday. As in 1994, the events will be watched closely for clues to who will gain power and who will fall out of favor under the next leader, his son Kim Jong Un.

---

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jean H. Lee, the Associated Press bureau chief for Korea, has made 11 trips to North Korea since 2008, including eight visits this year.

---

This state funeral, however, is also likely to bear the hallmarks of Kim Jong Il's rule, including more of a military presence for the man who elevated the armed forces as part of his "songun," or "military first," policy.

Kim, who has been lying in state since he died Dec. 17, celebrated major occasions with lavish, meticulously choreographed parades designed to show off the nation's military might, such as the October 2010 display when he introduced his son and anointed successor to the world.

"A display of weapons may also be a way to demonstrate that the military remains loyal to the succession process," said Ahn Chan-il of the World Institute for North Korea Studies in South Korea. "There may even be a small-scale military parade involving airplanes."

Like his father was in 1994, Kim Jong Un has been stoic in a dark blue Mao-style suit in mourning period appearances at Kim Jong Il's bier ? but so far without the black armband that Kim Jong Il wore at the funeral to mark him as head mourner.

He has also shown a flair for mixing politics with public occasion: By meeting Monday with a delegation of South Korean mourners led by a former first lady, the leadership is sending a clear message to Seoul that it is open to improving relations after years of animosity.

Kim Jong Un would have been a boy when his grandfather died, and there's no sign of the young Kim in footage of the 1994 funeral. But it's clear from footage of him during the mourning period for his father that he has seen and studied the scene inside the presidential palace and is well-schooled in the behavior expected as heir to the nation's leader.

The funeral in 1994 is likely to serve as the template for this week's events.

At the time, details about Kim Il Sung's funeral in a country largely isolated from the West were shrouded in mystery, revealed only after state TV aired segments of the events in what was the world's best glimpse of the hidden communist nation. Most foreigners aside from those living in North Korea were shut out, and the same is expected this week.

Back then, the formation of the funeral committee was examined closely for signs of who was expected to rise in power in the post-Kim Il Sung era; likewise, observers dissected the 232 names on last week's list to see who was still in favor.

When Kim Il Sung died, it was unclear whether North Korea would hew to traditional Korean mourning rites or follow rituals seen elsewhere in the communist world.

According to the official account of Kim Il Sung's death, what appeared to the world as North Korean ritual was a highly personal response by Kim Jong Il, who is credited by his official biography with choreographing every detail of the funeral.

The biography says there was discussion about where to bring Kim Il Sung's body, and it was the son who proposed turning the massive assembly hall where his father worked for 20 years into a public place of mourning ? and then, a year later, into a permanent shrine where his embalmed body still lies.

Kim Jong Il's biography also gives him credit for turning the funeral into a "scene of immortalizing the leader" and for breaking tradition by picking a smiling image of the late president taken in 1986 instead of the somber image typical for Korean funerals.

To this day, portraits of Kim Il Sung that hang in every building and on the lapels of nearly all North Koreans show a smiling Kim Il Sung. And since his death, pictures of Kim Jong Il erected at mourning sites across the nation show him beaming as well.

The official biography says Kim Jong Il picked one of his father's neckties for the body and ordered the portrait bedecked with magnolias, the national flower, not traditional black ribbon. He arranged for the coffin to be transported in the black sedan Kim used as president, rather than a gun carriage or armored car, and called for the "Song of Gen. Kim Il Sung" to be played in lieu of a dirge, his biography says.

After the closed-door funeral, footage shows Kim leaving the hall and standing on a dais sheathed in red, surveying the scene alongside top party and military officials as the black Lincoln Continental bearing his father's body departs the palace grounds to a military salute.

A car with Kim's massive portrait ringed with white magnolias led the motorcade, followed by the hearse bearing the president's body, and then a phalanx of police in white helmets riding on motorcycles in a "V" formation.

Kim Jong Il and other members of the funeral committee followed slowly behind in sedans. Soldiers in jeeps flanked the procession.

Through the streets of Pyongyang the procession went, from the Kumsusan Assembly Hall where official accounts say Kim died to the central square that bears his name, and eventually back to the vast palace where his body lies in state.

North Koreans lined the streets and filled the air with theatrical wails, many of the women in traditional black Korean dresses and white mourning ribbons affixed to their hair.

The procession reached Kim Il Sung Square, where hundreds of thousands of mourners were waiting, and the hearse circled the square again before returning to the assembly hall for a gun salute.

A similar procession may be in the works for Wednesday, but with the late leader's trademark red "kimjongilia" begonias replacing the magnolias, and snow and frost as a backdrop.

But the funeral for Kim Jong Il, who made it state policy to revere Kim Il Sung as North Korea's "eternal" president, probably will not outdo that for his father, some said.

"Kim Jong Il's funeral will likely be similar to Kim Il Sung's. But it doesn't mean that the majesty and dignity of Kim Jong Il's funeral will exceed those of Kim Il Sung's," said Prof. Jeong Jin-gook of the Daejeon Health Sciences College in South Korea. "Kim Il Sung still remains the most respected among North Koreans."

Kim Jong Il observed a three-year period of mourning for his father ? a decision harking back to Korean tradition.

Mourning rites have evolved over the decades. In South Korea, most people observe a three- or five-day mourning period. But few families receive mourners at home anymore; South Korea has a thriving and organized network of mourning facilities at hospitals where everything from the mourning clothes to the food and drinks offered to visitors can be arranged for a fee.

In North Korea, a streamlined, three-day mourning period is typical, and most workers are given three days paid leave for the death of a family member, according to the Korea Institute for National Unification in South Korea.

Before the peninsula's 1945 division, some Koreans mourned the loss of a parent for up to two years, according to Prof. Lim Jae-hae, a folklorist at Andong National University in South Korea.

Kim Jong Il may have put his personal stamp on his father's funeral in 1994, but so far Kim Jong Un is sticking to tradition. From the blue suit to the solemn bows before the begonia-bedecked bier, the young leader-in-waiting has closely followed his father's cues.

Still, he is credited with one directive that wasn't in Kim Jong Il's biography but will no doubt serve as fodder for his: He instructed the city to keep mourners lined up in subzero temperatures warm with hot water and tea.

Putin crony appointed to top Kremlin staff post

?A former KGB colleague of Putin has been appointed chief of staff for the Kremlin, signaling continuing concern about the strength of the protest movement.

A close political ally and old KGB colleague of Vladimir Putin has been given the top Kremlin staff job, a move that some experts say is an effort by Mr. Putin to lock down the levers of supreme authority at a time when mass public protests threaten social instability.

Sergei Ivanov, a former KGB general who was defense minister for six years under Putin, was appointed chief of Kremlin staff Thursday by President Dmitry Medvedev, in a terse announcement published on Mr. Medvedev's official website.

Mr. Ivanov is considered to be one of the toughest, smartest and most experienced apparatchiks in Russian government, and his track record of loyalty to Putin is long and undisputed.

Experts say it's also significant that acting Kremlin chief of staff Vladislav Surkov, the architect of the Putin-era system of "managed democracy,"?was apparently passed over for the appointment.

Over 35,000 people have signed a Facebook pledge to attend a downtown Moscow rally on Saturday to protest against alleged vote rigging and political manipulation in the Dec. 4 Duma elections. Opposition leaders blame Surkov for orchestrating the fraud, as well as other restrictions in Russian politics that include refusing to register political parties and candidates that are too independent, channeling official resources and state media support behind the ruling United Russia party, and creating a network of pro-Kremlin pressure groups, such as the youth movement Nashi, to back Kremlin policies.

"It's important that Ivanov has been appointed at this time, because he is a strong and reliable figure who is 100 percent loyal to Putin," says Sergei Strokan, a columnist with the Moscow business newspaper Kommersant.

"It's a storm warning. It's clear that Russian authorities are rattled by how rapidly this protest movement is growing, and they are not sure how to respond. But they want a strong hand in that important and sensitive job. It shows that Putin is in charge, calling the shots and stacking the Kremlin with his own people," Mr. Strokan says.

"But it's equally important to note that Surkov was not appointed. He is a figure that is particularly irritating to the opposition, who blame him for all sorts of shenanigans. It's possible that Putin may be trying to take the pressure off ahead of more street rallies by sidelining Surkov. ? Basically, it illustrates that Russian authorities are trying to do something, but definitely want to hold on to all means of control."

Justice Department antitrust division probing Verizon cable spectrum deals

Looks like AT&T isn't the only major carrier having issues with the guv'ment lately. Remember that 20MHz AWS spectrum that Verizon got from Cox Communications for a cool $315 million this month? How's about that juicy spectrum Big Red scored from Comcast, Time Warner and Bright House for $3.6 billion? Well, it turns out those deals are raising an eyebrow or two over at the Justice Department, which just launched an investigation into the matter. A spokesperson for the department confirmed the probe with Bloomberg News but declined to provide further details. A source familiar with the investigation, however, says the antitrust division is involved. Apparently, there's concern that the deal puts too much control of the airwaves in the hands of Verizon. For its part, Verizon declined to comment, saying it has yet to receive information about the investigation.

US nuke chief supports Japan nuke plant stability (AP)

TOKYO ? The U.S. nuclear safety chief said Tuesday that he is comfortable with Japan's announcement that its tsunami-damaged nuclear power plant has reached stable conditions, brushing off skepticism raised by experts.

Gregory Jaczko, chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said significant progress has been made at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant since the March disaster and that he welcomes Japan's decision to now move toward a cleanup and the plant's eventual closure.

Measures taken by Japan have been consistent with how the U.S. would handle a similar crisis, he said.

"I feel very comfortable that they have really completed the requirements that are necessary to move on to the next stage," Jaczko told reporters a day after inspecting the Fukushima plant. "These are really significant milestones that have been achieved and I think they made the right determination to move on to the next stage in the decontamination and decommissioning activities."

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda announced last Friday that the plant has achieved "cold shutdown conditions," saying significant progress had been made in the nine months since the March 11 tsunami sent three reactors at the plant into meltdowns in the world's worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl in 1986.

The announcement officially paves the way for a new phase that will eventually allow some evacuees back to less-contaminated areas currently off limits.

Fully closing the plant safely is expected to take 30 or more years.

Experts say the plant 140 miles (230 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo is running with makeshift equipment and remains vulnerable to cold weather and earthquakes.

Jaczko said the plant has made "tremendous progress in ultimately bringing the reactors themselves to conditions in which there is no energy left in the reactors to have an offsite release of radiation."

Their temperatures have decreased significantly and the heat produced by the reactor fuel is very low, he said.

Jaczko said it was a "humbling experience" to see the severe damage to the reactors and the facilities during his visit.

He said continuing efforts to analyze the conditions of the reactor cores are very important.

"It will be many years until someone is able to actually get into Unit 1 and Unit 2 and Unit 3 to really understand the condition of the fuel," he said.

Jaczko promised continuing support for Japan's decades-long cleanup effort.

Is it only hardcore UFC haters who'll say DREAM's 2011 card is better than UFC 144?

Above are the competing posters. Below is DREAM's attempt at getting people fired up for its card headlined by the Fedor Emelianenko fight against Satoshi Ishii.

Bell Mobility hints at Ice Cream Sandwich release dates for Galaxy S II, Raider and Sensation

We've come across an internal document from Bell Mobility that's bound to raise the hopes of a few good Canadians. Yes folks, we're talking Ice Cream Sandwich. The carrier to the north estimates that it'll have Android 4.0 ready for the Sensation in February, which is to be followed by the Raider's update in March -- this handset may be more familiar to AT&T customers as the Vivid. Pulling up the rear, users of the Galaxy S II are to expect the upgrade in April, and while the Optimus LTE is also mentioned, there's no specific time frame for that one. Certainly estimated release dates don't always come to fruition, but at least we know what Bell's aiming for, anyway.

PocketCloud Explore arrives for Android, enables file searching and viewing across multiple computers

A new product has hit the Android Market and we think you might find it quite nifty. Known as PocketCloud Explore, the app allows users to search for and view files across their PCs and Macs, all without ever needing to surrender data to the cloud. Simple file management is also part of the game, as users can remotely create, rename and delete both folders and documents, as well as upload files from their smartphone to the remote destination. The basic version of PocketCloud Explore retails for $4.99, which is limited to two associated computers. For users juggling additional boxes and lappies, the developer plans to introduce a premium service that will allow access to a greater number of systems. Even the basic product, however, offers unlimited transfers, which means your files will always be within reach. Curious for more? You'll find the full PR after the break.

Five dead bodies found in Virginia home (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Sheriff's officers have found five dead bodies in a home on Virginia's Eastern Shore, authorities said on Friday.

The Accomack County Sheriff's Office said deputies found the bodies when they responded to a call reporting an attempted suicide on Thursday afternoon, the office said in a statement.

"At the present time, the suspect seems to be among the deceased," it said.

The bodies were found in the unincorporated hamlet of Gargatha. They have been taken to the medical examiner's office in Norfolk, Virginia, and the investigation is continuing, it said.

Accomack is one of two Virginia counties on the Eastern Shore of Chesapeake Bay.

Romney defends time in business world (AP)

SIOUX CITY, Iowa ? Mitt Romney is defending his time as a business executive, saying that he ultimately added tens of thousands of jobs despite cuts at some companies.

Romney on Thursday night acknowledged that he cut jobs at some of the businesses his venture capital firm took over. He says that some of his investments didn't pay off and that not all businesses succeed.

His chief rival, Newt Gingrich, has accused Romney of shredding companies and costing Americans jobs. Romney says that he worked to help businesses strengthen themselves and survive.

Romney also says that he welcomes the criticism and predicts that President Barack Obama will use it against him if Romney wins the Republican nomination.

Romney made the remarks during the latest GOP debate.

FACT CHECK: GOP candidates get Obama policy wrong

(AP) ? Republican presidential candidates have claimed that the Obama administration is cleansing government files of references to radical Islam, an assertion so juicy that politicians keep repeating it ? even though it's a wild exaggeration.

The latest to run with the story is former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who told a crowd in Des Moines that the president "actually ordered all references to Islam and Muslim sanitized out of our national security documents."

And over the weekend, Newt Gingrich told a veterans' forum in Des Moines that the administration has "issued instructions, for example, that in developing training papers on terrorism that no mention should be made of radical Islam."

Rep. Michele Bachmann paved the way on Oct. 28, when she told 75 Republican faithful in Iowa that "Obama is allowing terror suspect groups to write the FBI's terror training manual."

So where is this coming from? Last September, the online publication Wired.com broke a story that an FBI analyst had given a lecture to bureau trainees that was critical of Islam. The publication followed up, disclosing that the same analyst had given a similar lecture to an FBI-sponsored event in New York City. The FBI immediately ordered a comprehensive review of all the materials it uses to train its agents.

It would be hard to overstate the importance the FBI attaches to assistance from the Muslim community in the bureau's terrorism investigations in the United States ? a point that FBI Director Robert Mueller drove home in an appearance Wednesday at the Senate Judiciary Committee.

"We have met with various representatives of the Muslim community" in the aftermath of the inappropriate FBI training to convey just how seriously the bureau takes the matter, said Mueller.

In an effort to ensure that all of its training materials are appropriate, Mueller said, the bureau assembled a five-member panel of experts on Islam ? two people from inside the FBI and three outside scholars ? from Yale, Princeton and Johns Hopkins University.

The review found a very small percentage of material that was either inappropriate or inaccurate or both, and the bureau immediately got rid of it, said a bureau official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to be able to discuss the internal handling of the issue.

"I believe our relationship with the Muslim community is very good," said Mueller. The director told Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., that "we are addressing" the problem and that "it's an anomaly."

A few snippets of the former FBI analyst's assertions reflect the kind of information the bureau regards as inappropriate.

The materials for the FBI analyst's instructional presentation said that mainstream American Muslims are likely to be terrorist sympathizers, that the Prophet Mohammed was a cult leader and that the Islamic practice of giving charity is no more than a funding mechanism for combat.

A video of the New York City lecture included a reference to "an Islamic motivation" for violent acts of terrorism. The analyst no longer teaches training classes.

Stopping dangerous cell regrowth reduces risk of further heart attacks

Stopping dangerous cell regrowth reduces risk of further heart attacks [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 6-Dec-2011

"After an arterial injury, the inner layer of cells in the artery begins to regrow. In the long term, this usually causes more harm than good", says Maria Gomez.

A common cause of arterial injuries is the clearing of blocked arteries often performed on patients who have had a heart attack.

"Initially the artery is opened up, but after a while new cell formation increases the risk of further heart attacks."

In animal experiments, the research groups have demonstrated the opposite effects of the two proteins. The carotid artery of rats was damaged with balloon dilation, simulating the procedure carried out on heart attack patients.

After two weeks, there was noticeably less new cell formation in the arteries that had more of the protein IRT-1. With AIF-1, the opposite effect was observed.

"The interesting thing is that both proteins are formed from the same gene and we have now found a mechanism to control the balance in the formation of the two. Using a new drug we can thus increase the amount of the 'good' protein, IRT-1. It is not an approved drug, but it has been tested on mice and appears to be tolerated well", says Maria Gomez.

The researchers have also analysed over 150 fatty deposits ('plaques') removed from the carotid arteries of patients.

"We saw that the dangerous plaques those that are unstable, easily rupture, are more inflamed and more often produce symptoms contain more AIF-1. Those with a higher proportion of the protein IRT-1 are less dangerous", observes Lisa Berglund, co-author of the published study.

Diabetes patients develop more plaques, and more often dangerous ones, than non-diabetics. Diabetics have a significantly higher risk of suffering a heart attack.

The regrowth of cells in the arteries also leads to negative changes in blood flow. It may even be the case that AIF-1 is involved in the actual formation of plaques in the arteries.

Heart attacks are the most common cause of death in Sweden and many patients have repeated attacks, which are treated by clearing constrictions in the arteries of the heart using various methods.

"If we could reduce the risk of repeat attacks, this would represent very significant progress", says Maria Gomez.
